Shopify analytics vs GA4

Shopify and GA4 often disagree because they measure different things in different ways. The job is not to force a perfect match. It is to know what each system is good for.

Why the numbers disagree

Shopify records orders in the commerce system. GA4 depends on events, sessions, consent, browser behavior, attribution rules, checkout behavior, and configuration. Some discrepancy is normal. Large discrepancy is a setup problem.

1

Shopify is stronger for orders

Use Shopify for transaction truth, fulfillment, refunds, and operational revenue.

2

GA4 is stronger for behavior

Use GA4 for traffic trends, user paths, channel context, and campaign diagnostics.

3

Attribution is never neutral

Different models assign credit differently. Build reporting habits around that reality.

Where setup usually breaks

Most Shopify analytics problems are caused by duplicate tags, missing purchase events, payment provider referrals, consent behavior, ad blockers, time zone mismatch, and unclear definitions of revenue.

1

Referral exclusions

Payment gateways can appear as revenue sources if not handled.

2

Duplicate purchase events

Multiple integrations can inflate revenue.

3

Server-side tracking

Useful for mature stores, but still needs consent and careful deduplication.

Analytics checklist

1

Align time zones

Shopify, GA4, ad platforms, and dashboards should be intentionally configured.

2

Test purchase events

Confirm event firing, transaction IDs, currency, tax, shipping, and deduplication.

3

Exclude payment referrals

Prevent gateways from hijacking attribution.

4

Define revenue terms

Gross, net, refunds, tax, shipping, and discounts must be consistent.

Professional notes

1

Professional take

Use Shopify for accounting-like order truth and GA4 for directional marketing behavior.

2

Red flag

If Shopify and GA4 differ wildly and nobody knows why, paid media decisions are probably being made on sand.
